Do you think it's okay not to use the terms "boyfriend/girlfriend"?

I really don't like those terms because of how short-term our society has made them. I tell people he's my boyfriend, even though he's more like my future fiance just because there's no explaining to do. I would think that, depending on her age, she shouldn't be mad. But that's just me. :)
