How can i sharpen images on windows movie maker?

i scanned old pictures onto my pc and they look clean and sharp when i look at them individually. the problem lies when i upload to movie maker and play the movie. the pictures are extremely blocky and dull. ive changed my screen resolution and that does not make a difference. what can i do?
